As many of you will know, Instagram is by far my favourite social media platform. Annoying algorithms aside, there is such a wonderful community spirit to be found there, and it’s a place where creativity flourishes. I love filling my feed with small businesses, fellow mums and monochrome delights, as I like to feel inspired as I scroll. So this month, I thought it would be great to do a little interview series, where I get to chat to the people behind some amazing Instagram accounts that inspire me.
This week, say hello to an incredible brand, Modern Kid Shop.
Tell us a bit about yourself…
Hi! I’m Althea, 28, from Hertfordshire. I live with my husband Jody and our two boys, Asher, 6, and Isaac, 4.
What made you decide to start your own business?
I started Modern Kid Shop just over a year ago, I’d always had a passion for kids clothing, in particular, monochrome tees with minimal designs. I had a couple of ideas and thought I’d make the most of being a stay at home mum and the flexibility to run a little side business!
How do you achieve a good work/life balance?
I don’t think there’s any key to getting a good work/life balance – not completely. Except just trying to make the most of the situation you are in. There’s always going to be something you find you don’t have enough time for, and that’s OK! As long as everyone is happy and healthy, that’s good enough for me!
Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
I draw a lot of inspiration from similar shops on Instagram who have a love of monochrome, but also my main inspiration is children themselves and reaffirming their place within the world and all they can bring to it. We are big believers in promoting positivity and kindness.
What would your advice be to anyone wanting to start their own ‘Instagram business’?
I’d say go for it! If you have the time and passion you can make anything happen! Also, something I’ve found really helpful is drawing alongside other similar small businesses. It can definitely feel like a lonely place starting up a business, so having a few people around you to ask questions and get advice from can be crucial!
